Bentley Boys

The Luggage Room pays homage to the Bentley Boys and its approach to living life to its fullest - work hard, and play hard.

The Bentley Boys was a group of wealthy British youngsters that used to race Bentley cars. Many of them lived on Grosvenor Square, leading to it earning the nickname ‘Bentley Corner'.

If you look closely, you will see little nods to the famous group throughout the bar. Like the Bentley ‘Blower' model near the entrance or the mysterious initials in every table that corresponds to each racer.

The birth of Speakeasy bars

During the early 1920s, the United States of America put the 18th Amendment into place, which meant that the manufacture, distribution, and sale of alcohol was prohibited. The Government had believed that alcohol was the root of all crimes, and to ban alcohol meant that the crime rate would decrease exponentially.

However, this did not turn out to be like they imagined as people sought alternative ways to obtain alcohol. And so, the era of speakeasies was born. This term originated from bartenders warning patrons to "speak easy," or keep their voices down, to avoid attracting unwanted attention. To gain entrance, one had to share a password, a secret handshake, or a specific knock.

The 1920s was also the time when cocktails were popularized as bars would mix the alcohol with sugar, mint, fruit juices and many others in order to disguise the taste of the poorly made alcohol. So, while the government dreamt of turning prisons into factories, the people reveled in the clandestine world of speakeasies.
