Bentley Boys
The Luggage Room confirms itself as a standout among premium cocktail bars in London, Mayfair. The reason why? It lies in the vision of the Bentley Boys, reflected in the atmosphere of the venue, as well as in a tribute to their hard work and determination.
The Bentley Boys were a group of wealthy British youngsters who used to race Bentley cars. Grosvenor Square was their home, earning it the nickname “Bentley Corner”.
If you look closely, you will see subtle nods to the famous group throughout the bar, from the Bentley “Blower” model near the entrance to the mysterious initials on each table, each one corresponding to a racer.
Mayfair’s Best Kept Speakeasy Secret
During the early 1920s, the United States introduced the 18th Amendment into place, prohibiting the manufacture, distribution, and sale of alcohol. The Government believed that alcohol was the root of all crime, and that banning it would cause crime rates to decrease exponentially.
However, this did not turn out to be like they imagined. People looked for alternative ways to obtain alcohol, which led to the era of speakeasies. This term comes from bartenders warning patrons to “speak easy”, or keep their voices down, to avoid attracting unwanted attention. To gain entrance, one had to share a password, a secret handshake or a specific knock.
The 1920s was also the time when cocktails were popularized, as bars would mix alcohol with sugar, mint, fruit juices, and many other ingredients in order to disguise the taste of the poorly made alcohol. So, while the government dreamt of turning prisons into factories, the people reveled in the clandestine world of speakeasies.
